Seahorse

I like seahorses - there is just something about them that really appeal. OK - I love cuteness - a lot... In fact, when I draw any critter, I make the eyes way big and give it that sweet baby face... Ahhhaaaaaaaa !
Got any spear beanie babies?
Never mind, I'll just go draw another seahorse...

I did this drawing at the Zoo - these little guys are really interesting to watch.

Hope you are getting some lovely spring weather...

Aqua-Mandala

Happy Spring! I am so looking forward to some warm weather! Beautiful sunshine here today, now we just need some warmth.

I would like to share with you one of my mandalas today. I have a lot of fun with my colour pencils and ink pens that I lay down over an acrylic layer. These works have a 'zen-tangle' type feeling and they are created in a meditative way - with a focus on one thing... awareness of the colour flowing onto the paper. I was influenced by a book I got out of the library full of illuminated manuscripts from the Middle-Ages. The little dragon in the lower left corner sneaked into the work right out of one of my favourite pieces...

Spirals are an ongoing theme in my work as well - I will tell you more about spirals and why I find them so compelling another day.

Stay Happy - I hope this blog post finds you well and peaceful...

Dragon's Joy

Happy New Year! Wishing you wonder and joy in your life for the coming year!

I choose this painting for my New Year greeting because of the spiral - seeing as we are on the start of another amazing cycle with this first day of the year. And also because of the positive feeling I get from this image. The colours are just so joyful and peaceful - and the feeling of light drawing you to the centre and radiating back out. There is just so much life and happiness here....

The title of this painting is 'Dragon's Joy' and that is where it came from - the feeling of joy it gave me to make it. The dragon's head is painted using a photo reference I took of a snake in the Toronto Zoo - they sit on their branch coiled up in total contentment - utterly still and present like some sort of reptilian masters of meditation. I hope we can all focus this coming year on the contentment that comes from stillness and presence...

I am deeply grateful for the amazing year that we have just finished. I am grateful for my family, friends, students and my health! There are just so many things that bless my life. Like my brother Bill says "It's all good."

I hope that you find happiness, health and peace in 2015...

♥ peace...  Judith

Plein Air, by the Lake

What a beautiful afternoon,
sitting quietly beside the lake.
The Sun was misty hazy softly shining...
almost apologetic for last week's heat.

Downey Woodpecker

This is out of my sketch book and was drawn with a charcoal pencil. This drawing was created from a photo and not from life. Although I have seen lots of these little guys in the woods while hiking... One day I even had one land on my hand and take a sunflower... This event happened at the Lynde Shores Conservation Area  where the birds are hand fed throughout the winter and become very tame - lots of chickadees will land on your hand for the seeds and it is very special, although I have only had one little woodpecker land and take a seed and dart off to a tree to eat it... Made my day - I was smiling for a week.
