Ode to Green

Life jumps out
Of any of crack.

Commanding attention!
Teaching resilience...

Watch the miracle
Sprouting joy.

Green is a hunter,
Green is a sap.

Great green globs
Growing without apology.

Confounding artists
To contain the power.

Give up...

Surrender to the glory.

Celebrate green!

Training Your Inner Critic to be Constructive - Eight Steps

Good morning everybody ... Thank you for subscribing to my Art and Poetry Blog. This is where you will find my articles about the art process. Please make sure that you subscribe so that you do not miss out on any of the insights and artworks I will be sharing here.

Today, I would like to give you some guidance on dealing with your inner art critic... I have personally struggled with an out of control inner art critic, and have watched many of my students struggle as well. The inner art critic can be crippling. I get that...

But when you train your inner critic in the art of constructive criticism, this part of you can enhance the joy in your art making, not crush it.

Follow these 8 steps to develop a helpful inner art critic, not an abusive one....

1) Getting critical of your inner critic is the first step and it starts with observation... The nature of the inner critic is easily influenced by criticism. Learning how to train your inner critic is actually pretty easy once you understand this. Work with your critic with patience to train this valuable art making team member. Always come back to the question... "Is that helpful?"

2) Understand the job of the inner art critic. What exactly is the job that your inner art critic is supposed to do?  Most of us think that the only job for the critic to do is to judge success or failure. This is the main misconception about the role of the inner critic, and why it can become so destructive and crippeling... The function of the critic is actually much more.... Thankfully...

3) Train your inner art critic to focus on the art elements!  Examine all of your art works in terms of shape, line, placement, proportion, values, colours, texture,  ect... All strengths and weaknesses are related to the art elements.

4) Encourage your inner art critic to become like Sherlock Holmes... a detective solving a visual puzzle.... To solve this mystery, the clues are always found in the art elements.

5) Your inner art critic has the capacity to identify both the strengths and weaknesses of your art. In fact, I would encourage you to start any critique with first identifying strengths... Identify weaknesses second.

6) When you identify the strengths of your artwork, always think in terms of art elements. Love the shapes, love the lines. Pay close attention to your feelings of pleasure and resonance. Celebrate your success! Consider how to include more of these successful elements in future artwork.

7) When you identify the weaknesses of your artwork, also do so in terms of art elements. Specifically focus on what will solve or resolve the weakness. The critic needs to be directed to identify specific art elements that can be improved...  Say that you are drawing a portrait... The job of the internal critic is not to judge if the portrait is good or bad and by extension, that you are good or bad... The job of the critic is to identify that the nose is too big and needs to move over to the left...  Now that is helpful and constructive because then, you know what... Just make the nose smaller and move it over and see if there's an improvement to the drawing... Also, consider how to develop and strengthen your art making skills for future work.

8) Thank your inner art critic for having a 'good eye' and being so devoted to your success.

That's the best way you use the critic...

Please feel free to forward this post.

Best wishes...

The Power of Cuteness

I like cute cats... what can I say about that?

When I was studying fine art in university, this is not something I would ever have admitted to..

But when I really get honest, I find there is a strong response in me to the cute, to the small and fluffy.

Cuteness makes me feel peaceful and happy... Maybe that's enough...

Exploring an aesthetic of cuteness,  sweet child like innocence... I am delighted in the beauty of big eyes that hold no worries, and smiles that hide no fear. Everything gonna be alright...

Maybe it's a worthy approach... Artwork that makes me feel peaceful and happy and other people feel peaceful and happy...

These drawings are my chance to share a bit of peaceful happiness in the world.

That's a big thing.  That's a worthy thing...

This is an original work of art. The medium is colour pencils on  9" x 12" drawing bristol.  The drawing itself will fit beautifully into an 8" x 10" matted frame.

ENJOY!

I am also grateful to be able to share my artwork with you!  This painting is called 'Godspeed.'

It is about the feeling like a Slowpoke ....

I have written a poem to go with it...

LOVE-POKES

Us Love-Pokes
aren't in a rush.
That's just cuz
life is so lush...

Love calls us
to savour now.
Attention...
To beautys' wow!

This step here
is just so fine,
take a minute
to smell the Pines...

It's okay
to be this way.
God has plans
to fill our day...

Just enough
Our cups are full.
Right here now,
we feel Loves pull...

 Stay safe.... peaceful happiness Judith...

Finding My Flow - Cultivating Gratitude

Having an art practice can benefit your health and well-being.

Understanding how art can help you be happy, and how being happy can help you be healthy is really important.

An art-making helps cultivate gratitude.

How to be grateful for the beauty of simple things will train you to focus on the positive. This practice can change the channel of your consciousness.

Art-making can train your eyes to see.  When you learn to appreciate the beauty of the visual world,  all sensory experience is enhanced.  Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm... I am blessed!

Life is an abundant adventure....

Hope that you enjoy this painting.  It is 8" x 10" acrylics on masonite. The title is...

"Finding My Flow."

Best wishes for your health!

Breath deeply
Glowing sunshine
Thick as honey,
Dancing on the edge
of Autumn
Summer's grace
Receding...Blessing
Glad and glorious
Frilly petals

To the setting sun.

Labour Day Sunset

Wow what a fabulous Labor day it's been this year...  warm and windy and almost raining all day... I'm happy that I just saw the most beautiful sunset. It was red and pink , magenta, and purple... so lovely! It was really really really beautiful.  Oddly enough, I happened to do a painting yesterday that foreshadowed the sunset that I we had today... so I'm sharing this beautiful painting of a sunset with you the 'Labor Day Sunset.'

I'm sitting here listening to my little singers, The Crickets and all the other insects who are adding to the Beautiful song that they make this time of the year...  this is a real treasure to me!  Its so lovely and so peaceful...

Yesterday  I was sitting and watching the sun set, and a little dragonfly landed beside me and watched the sunset with me for a while... he kept on looking up at me with his big blue eyes, as big as his head...  and before he left, he landed right on my finger as if to say "thanks for watching the sunset with me" and then off he flew...

Thanks for reading my blog.

Golden Child. Art as Spiritual Practice

The core of my practice as an artist is actually the practice, the action of making.

My process is very much driven by meditative practice. Allow the mind to chatter,  but it gets quite with deep art making focus. It is such a relief to escape the mind chatter.  Peaceful happiness rushes in,  along with an expansive feeling of time and space.

Curiosity, freedom and the willingness to not know... like letting the artwork call the shots,  brush stroke by  brush stroke... Colour by colour... Shape by shape.. Creativity has wildness ... and needs relaxed acceptance. More like listening and less like talking.  This is why artists follow their muse. When you learn to listen to the still quiet voice within....  where your art spirit lives... you will learn to love.

The interaction of hand,  brush,  paint and movement. And a deep feeling of gratitude that I have been gifted with the resources to devote some time to the practice.

A deep feeling of gratitude to be surrounded by such intense beauty.  The artwork becomes a humble offering of reverence for this beauty.

The artwork itself will always have limitations and will never fully contain the beauty... but it's enough.  It's enough to brighten my ability to see and  appreciate the beautiful.  And I hope that my viewers can get a sense of peaceful happiness from looking at it.

Blessings... Judith...

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's day and a great big thank you to all you Dads and all you Uncle's doing a great job raising the kids in our community

I'm sharing with you today the demo I did for the kids in my zoom classs so that they would have fabulous artwork to give their dads today.... we chose the image of the seahorse because seahorse the fathers look after the young; an appropriate image to share with the kids in honour of Father's Day..  and seahorses are just super fun to draw...

My Dad will be 90 years old in July,  and he is working with some health challenges. But he has a lot of courage and grit. So I am very grateful that I still have my Dad and I will be giving my seahorse drawing to my Dad for Father's Day too.

My Dad has a sweet tooth and he loves icecream...

Have a joyous day!

The Purpose of Art

Well...
The purpose of Art it's not anything that somebody else can tell you... phew... I'm off the hook for that blog title...

It  is a big job to figure out the purpose of your own art... and there is no one defining purpose either... change is the constant that we can count on...

Here's some possibilities and motivations that have informed my art process over the years..

Learning to Draw...
Becoming more observant...
Curiosity and learning about the world...
Learning about myself... and my values...
Developing courage...
Slowing down... calmness...
Developing the capacity to maintain deep focus...
Developing my own sense of aesthetics and beauty....
Developing and understanding visual symbols...
Exploring intuition,  dreams & the subconscious...
Learning how other people see see things...
Sharing,  community and friends....
Teaching and the privilege of sharing and encouraging others...
Becoming more open to Beauty...
Pleasure and joy... happiness...
Making decorations and a beautiful home...
Remembering experience and events...
Making gifts...

It has truly been a fabulous adventure and I have been blessed with the opportunity to share it with my family,  friends and students...

All of us are blessed with the spirit of creativity and deserve the space, time, freedom,  resources, safety, and encouragement to express it in whatever way fits each of us...

God bless us... everyone...

Wake Up

Well this is the first painting that I've made since we've been on lockdown...  I don't know what it was about chickens but I found after I was sitting around long enough, I started to want to draw chickens and lots of them... It kind of culminated in this guy ...

Chickens, in our culture are a symbol of fear... and the virus generated a lot of fear...the odd thing about that is... roosters are fearless... Especially Fighting Roosters...

I sat with that for a while and came up with the idea that maybe maybe true courage comes from facing fear and chickens can be a symbol of fear but also a symbol of Courage one of those double sided coin type symbols... they're also very beautiful...  enjoy....

Green Soup - Simple and Nutritious Food for the Busy Artist

Hey there!

Eating is crazy important! The process of cooking and eating healthy nutritious food can be very demanding of our time and resources... And as an artist, I would rather be drawing, but I have to eat well to draw well...

I know that there are so many food issues we are all dealing with and everyone is so busy...

I would like to share with you a recipe for Green Soup, this is so simple and it makes a BIG lot of soup that I can cook up and my family will eat it for a few days and we do not have to think to much about it. It is yummy and very easy to digest. It is also easy to modify; when you warm it up - throw in any left overs you have in the fridge or throw in any type of sauce  - lime juice is very nice...

I found the recipe on Pinterest, but I have made a lot of modifications... Which for me means simplifications....

Ingredients:
Bunch of green kale
Bunch of red kale
Bunch of Collards
Small cup of rice or grains of some sort
Heaping teaspoon of cumin
Filtered water (enough to cover your greens when they are in the pot)
Big pile of cooking onions
Oil to fry up your onions (I use either avocado or olive oil)
Himalayan Salt to taste

Method:
1) Wash your greens and cut off the ends of them.
2) Get your big soup pot.
3) Boil your water and put water and your greens in the pot on the stove.
4) Use your big kitchen scissors to cut up the greens a little bit so that they fit into the pot.
5) Add the Rice and the Cumin and some pink salt if you like it.
6) Bring to a boil, stir it a little bit.
7) Turn stove on minimum heat.
8) Put a lid on your soup pot and leave on minimum heat for a minimum of 2 hours.
9) Skin and chop your onions... put them in your big fry pan with some pink salt on them.
10) Put in enough of your oil to let them fry up nicely and caramelize them (this takes the most time - you have to stir them on medium heat for about half an hour till they brown up)
11) Add your caramelized onions to your greens after they have boiled for the 2 hours.
12) Use your hand held blender to puree your soup.

This recipe will not work for everyone, but it works for me and my family... Perhaps it may work for you too?

Done like Dinner - Enjoy...

Happy Winter Solstice

Happy Winter Solstice

I hope this blog post finds you well, happy and enjoying your holidays! I was honoured with the request to create a painting for the first Sunday of Advent to be shared with the congregation of my church... The theme was 'Hope.'

This is the painting I created. It was a lot of fun to make. I did a lot of the painting as a demonstration for my Adult Acrylic Creations painting class in Ajax... I was thrilled with the beautiful artwork that my students created in response to my suggestions for this project...

I have been deeply inspired by a book called 'Hope for the Flowers...' It is a very profound book about a couple of caterpillars called 'Stripe' and 'Yellow.' In the actual book, the caterpillars are illustrations in a very sweet cartoon style. I choose to make my 'Stripe' and 'Yellow a little bit more realistic... inspired by the beautiful tiger swallow tail butterfly.  But I couldn't help myself from putting the smiling faces on the bugs... Mmmmmmmmmmmmm Sweetness...

I was smiling all the while I was painting - what fun!

This will be the painting I exhibit at Allan's Artists Exhibition...

Have a wonderful holiday - Judith

Seahorse

I like seahorses - there is just something about them that really appeal. OK - I love cuteness - a lot... In fact, when I draw any critter, I make the eyes way big and give it that sweet baby face... Ahhhaaaaaaaa !
Got any spear beanie babies?
Never mind, I'll just go draw another seahorse...
